Koochiching County
Koochiching County Land and Forestry Department administers approximately 285,000 acres of forested. This Tax Forfeited land and its assets represent a statutory Trust Fund which pays the majority of the department activities and investments. Numerous other values of sustainable forest management exist including wildlife benefits, forest health and diversity, and 'economic multiplier' effects. The county administers 250 recreational cabin leases and a variety of recreational sites, camping sites, public water access points and hiker/hunter/skier trails. Approximately 80% of forested land is capable of producing a commercial timber/forest product. The multiple-use forest management program goal is a sustained yield flow of forest products taking into account a variety of site needs including timber production, wildlife benefit, water and aesthetic qualities, etc. Koochiching County has been licensed under the Sustainable Forestry Initiative Program, and has adopted the Statewide Site Level Forest Management Guidelines inclusive of Water Quality and Visual Quality Best Management Practices. It is currently [2006] working with certain other Minnesota counties, through a joint venture, to pursue third party forest certification under SFI and/or FSC [Forest Stewardship Council]. The County reforests all sites which are not expected to fully regenerate naturally. Approximately 25,000 - 100,000 trees are planted per year and 200-500 acres seeded from the air. Koochiching County sells timber to over 200 logging operators and mills.
